How oil forms

Oil is called a fossil fuel because it is formed from chemicals that were produced from ancient living things.



The carbon from the plants and animals has been trapped for hundreds of millions of years, but has been burned to make carbon dioxide in a very short time.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air has changed very quickly.
